Core grammar rules

Gender

Every noun is masculine or feminine: el/un (masculine), la/una (feminine).

Adjective position

Adjectives usually come after the noun and must agree: una casa grande (a big house).

Plurals

Nouns ending in a vowel add -s; nouns ending in a consonant add -es: el gato → los gatos, la flor → las flores.

Dropped pronouns

Subject pronouns (yo, tú...) are often left out because the verb ending already shows who is speaking: Hablo español (I speak Spanish).

Two verbs for "to be"

ser is for permanent traits (Soy alto), estar is for temporary states or location (Estoy cansado, Estoy en casa).

Question/exclamation marks

Spanish uses an upside-down mark at the start as well as the usual one at the end: ¿Cómo estás? ¡Qué bien!

Comparatives

Use más ... que (more than) or menos ... que (less than): más grande que (bigger than).

Showing possession

Spanish has no apostrophe-s. Use de instead: el libro de María (María's book).

Reflexive verbs

Some verbs add -se and a matching pronoun: levantarse (to get oneself up) → me levanto (I get up), te levantas (you get up).
