Special letters

Core grammar rules

Three genders

Nouns are der (masculine), die (feminine), or das (neuter); plural is always die.

Capitalised nouns

Every noun is capitalised, wherever it appears in the sentence: das Haus, die Schule.

Verb-second word order

In a main clause, the verb is always the second element: Heute gehe ich zur Schule (Today go I to school).

Cases

Articles and adjective endings change with the noun's role: nominative (subject), accusative (direct object), dative (indirect object), genitive (possession).

Separable verbs

Some verbs split: aufstehen โ†’ Ich stehe frรผh auf (I get up early) โ€” the prefix moves to the end.

Plurals

There is no single plural rule; common patterns add -e, -er, -(e)n, or -s, and the article is always die.

Modal verbs

Modal verbs like kรถnnen (can), mรผssen (must), wollen (want) push the main verb to the end: Ich kann gut singen (I can sing well).

Comparatives

Add -er for "more": schnell โ†’ schneller (faster); the superlative uses am -(e)sten: am schnellsten (fastest).

Word order for time, manner, place

Adverbials follow the order time, then manner, then place: Ich fahre heute mit dem Bus zur Schule (I go today by bus to school).
