Core grammar rules

Gender

Every noun is masculine or feminine. Articles must match: le/un (masculine), la/une (feminine).

Plurals

Most nouns add -s for the plural, usually silent: le chat → les chats.

Adjective position

Most adjectives come after the noun: une maison grande is wrong order for most — but common short adjectives (grand, petit, beau) come before: une grande maison.

Subject pronouns

je (I), tu (you informal), il/elle (he/she), nous (we), vous (you formal/plural), ils/elles (they).

Verb conjugation

Verbs change ending for each subject, e.g. parler: je parle, tu parles, il parle, nous parlons, vous parlez, ils parlent.

Negation

Wrap the verb in ne ... pas: Je ne sais pas (I don't know).

Asking questions

Add est-ce que before a statement, or invert the verb and subject: Est-ce que tu viens? / Viens-tu?

Comparing things

Use plus ... que (more than) or moins ... que (less than): plus grand que (bigger than).

Showing possession

French has no apostrophe-s. Use de instead: le livre de Marie (Marie's book).

Contractions

de + le becomes du, and à + le becomes au: je reviens du marché (I come back from the market).
